Navigating the Individual Health Insurance Market

The individual health insurance market offers more options than most people realize — and more complexity than most people want to deal with alone. ACA marketplace plans, short-term health insurance, health sharing ministries, dental and vision coverage, and supplemental plans all serve different needs and come with different tradeoffs. Subsidy eligibility, network considerations, deductible structures, and out-of-pocket maximums all affect the real cost of coverage. As an independent agency, we analyze your specific situation — income, health needs, budget, and preferred providers — and help you find the plan that delivers the best value for your circumstances.

Why Work With Fortunata Agency for Health Insurance?

  • We analyze your subsidy eligibility and identify the plans where your tax credits deliver the most value
  • We compare plans across all carriers in your area — not just the ones with the lowest premiums
  • We verify that your preferred doctors and hospitals are in-network before you enroll
  • We help you understand the real cost of coverage — premium plus expected out-of-pocket — not just the monthly payment
  • Our services are provided at no cost to you — we're compensated by the carrier, not by you

Health Insurance in Florida: What You Need to Know

Florida has one of the largest individual health insurance markets in the country, with significant competition among carriers on the ACA marketplace. Premium tax credits are available to individuals and families earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level — and enhanced subsidies enacted in recent years have extended meaningful credits to higher income levels. Florida did not expand Medicaid, which means there is a coverage gap for individuals earning below the subsidy threshold. Understanding where you fall in this landscape — and which plans offer the best combination of premium, deductible, network, and benefits for your specific health needs — requires expertise. We provide that expertise at no cost to you.

Understanding Enrollment Periods

You can only enroll in or change ACA marketplace plans during specific windows. The annual Open Enrollment Period runs from November 1 through January 15 for coverage beginning January 1 or February 1. Outside of open enrollment, you can only enroll if you experience a qualifying life event — losing other coverage, getting married, having a child, moving to a new state, or certain other changes in circumstances. Short-term health plans and supplemental coverage can be purchased at any time. If you miss open enrollment and don't have a qualifying event, short-term coverage may be your best option until the next open enrollment period.

Health Coverage Options

Select any coverage type below to understand how it works, who it's best suited for, and what to look for when comparing plans.

The Affordable Care Act marketplace offers comprehensive health coverage with standardized benefits — preventive care, prescription drugs, mental health, maternity, and more — and no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Plans are organized into metal tiers: Bronze (lowest premium, highest out-of-pocket), Silver, Gold, and Platinum (highest premium, lowest out-of-pocket).

Premium tax credits reduce your monthly premium based on your income. Cost-sharing reductions (available only on Silver plans) reduce your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. We analyze your income, health needs, and expected utilization to identify which metal tier and which specific plan delivers the best value. The right plan isn't always the lowest premium — a Gold plan with a lower deductible may cost less overall if you use your coverage regularly.

Key Points

  • No exclusions for pre-existing conditions
  • Premium tax credits available based on income
  • Cost-sharing reductions available on Silver plans for lower-income enrollees
  • Open enrollment runs November 1 – January 15; special enrollment for qualifying life events
