MEDICARE & INSURANCE FAQs

General

What is Medicare?

Federal health insurance for people 65+ and some younger with disabilities or specific conditions. Parts A (Hospital), B (Medical), C (Advantage), D (Drugs).

When should I enroll?

Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months around your 65th birthday. Missing it can trigger penalties.

Original Medicare vs. Advantage?

Original = Parts A & B (add Medigap/Part D if desired). Advantage = private plan combining A, B, and usually D, often with extra benefits and provider networks.

What is Medigap?

Private coverage that helps pay Medicare deductibles/coinsurance.

Best time to buy?

6-month Medigap Open Enrollment (starts when you’re 65+ and Part B is active). No medical underwriting in this window.

Do I need Part D if I don’t take meds?

Usually yes, unless you have other creditable drug coverage; delaying can add a lifetime penalty.

What’s the “donut hole”?

A coverage stage where you pay a larger share until reaching catastrophic coverage (plan-year thresholds apply).

Can I change plans later?
  • AEP: Oct 15–Dec 7 (changes effective Jan 1)
  • OEP: Jan 1–Mar 31 (MA members can switch MA plans or go back to Original Medicare)
  • SEPs: For moves, Medicaid status changes, loss of employer coverage, etc.
Does Medicare cover dental/vision/hearing?

Original Medicare generally does not; some MA plans do.

What if I move states?

MA/Part D availability is local; moving triggers an SEP to choose a new plan.

Do you charge a fee?

No. Consultations and plan reviews are no-cost. We’re paid by carriers if you enroll; your premium is the same whether you go direct or through us.
