MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT (MEDIGAP)
What It Is
Medigap works with Original Medicare (A & B) to help pay deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. You must have Parts A and B to enroll.
Key Benefits
- Predictable out-of-pocket costs
- Nationwide access
- Often includes limited foreign travel emergency benefit
- Guaranteed renewable (as long as premiums are paid)
Popular Plans Today
- Plan G: Comprehensive for new enrollees (excludes the Part B deductible)
- Plan N: Lower premiums with small copays; no Part B excess charges (state rules vary)
- High-Deductible G: Lower premium, higher deductible
Enrollment Timing
Your Medigap Open Enrollment is the 6-month period that starts when you’re 65+ and Part B is active. During this window you can enroll without medical underwriting. Afterward, health questions may apply.
Medigap vs. Advantage
Medigap = predictable costs, broad access. Advantage = lower premiums and extras, but networks and authorizations may apply. You can’t have both at once.
